Sunday 22nd March – snowshoe ***** - Semnoz – snow all day until late
afternoon then sunny but breezy!
We were the only people to stay the night up here which is not a surprise
as the forecast snow arrived around 8.30 and lasted until 3.30, the snow
ploughs did a wonderful job keeping the road open and passed our van many
times, I did stand out in the snow for half an hour to take its pic as it
passed the van and then over exposed it!!!! We had a good day in the van,
quite exciting really as the snow fell with a good breeze blowing too, we
both read loads and Mag did some knitting. Then with the sun starting to
break through at 3.30 we thought it was time to brave a snowshoe as a few
people had started to arrive including several snow kiters! It had been
cold all day barely raising above freezing and there were some good icicles
on the van and the top box had a good covering of snow; we had been toasty
all day with the diesel heater and we ran the van a couple of times to
charge the battery! So, we wrapped up well, put the snow shoes on, the
adjustable poles were a pain but was sorted things out and set off to the
left aiming for a ski lift just up the way, the scene all round when we
could see it was amazing with snow covered trees everywhere, being on the
top the wind was quite keen in our faces blowing snow into fantastic little
drifts, it was quite deep in places making walking hard but it was good
conditions for the snow kiters, one even had his baby on his back! We
passed the ski lift and continued to a ridge where we could see the valley
below and we were above the clouds, we walked back off piste towards the
van, Mag even managed to fall over a few times something she had not done
while skiing! We decided to walk up the highest point here the Cret De
Chatillon at 1702m for selfie time and to get the most amazing views all
round, you even caught a glimpse of Lac Annecy far below! We headed back
down to the van past the snow kiters doing some really high jumps. We were
hoping for another good sunset like last night but it didn’t happen so
Mag made a yummy pasta surprise as the temperature drops below freezing! As
for tomorrow our last day in the mountains, if sunny we might have a couple
of hour skiing, if not another snowshoe or even a walk round Annecy, it
will be a big surprise!
